Mozilla Foundation funds MIXI Research

MIXI researchers Suraj Uttamchandani, Matt Curinga, and John Drew received a $150,000 1-year grant from the Mozilla Responsible Computing Challenge (RCC), a partnership of Mozilla, Omidyar Network, Schmidt Futures, Craig Newmark Philanthropies and Mellon Foundation, for a project entitled Spatial Justice as a Bridge to Responsible Computing.

The funds allow us to study integrating spatial justice and computing into undergraduate college courses. We are looking at ways that computer science education can be expanded to a wider audience through focusing on big, complex issues. We will study the ways that students use the technical skills and framework of spatial analysis to develop deeper understandings of these topics, as well as the ways that grounding abstract CS concepts in material spatial contexts supports learning.
