Drawing from speculative design, Black Feminist and Womanist theories, this talk will present an innovative pedagogy Shaw calls "restorying through design", as an approach to engage youth in both interrogating and reimagining cultures or “codes'' of power in STEAM education through designing interactive physical artifacts (i.e., quilt patches as inspired by Black women’s quiltmaking practices).

Dr. Mia Shaw

A 2022 Ford Foundation Dissertation fellow, Dr. Mia Shaw is a 2023-2025 Assistant Professor/Faculty Fellow in the Department of Administration, Leadership, and Technology through the NYU Provost’s Postdoctoral Fellowship Program. Her research interests center on using creative, interdisciplinary technologies in order to support identity authorship, community building, and speculative literacy and design practices among Black and Brown youth. Mia earned a PhD in Teaching, Learning, and Teacher Education from the University of Pennsylvania, where she was advised by Dr. Yasmin Kafai. She is also an illustrator and comic artist who has used her art to support educational research.
